The two men killed in the Manchester synagogue attack have been named as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. Both were from the Crumpsall area, and their families have paid tribute to them as devoted members of the community who died trying to protect others.
Adrian Daulby's family described him as a "hero" who "tragically lost his life in the act of courage to save others". He was a worshipper who helped stop the attacker from entering Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue on Thursday. Police believe he was accidentally shot by an officer while he held a door closed against the assailant.
The family of Melvin Cravitz, who is thought to have been stabbed at the gate of the synagogue, said he "would do anything to help anyone". They added: "He was so kind, caring and always wanted to chat and get to know people. He was devoted to his wife, family and loved his food. He will be sorely missed."
The attacker, named by police as Jihad al-Shamie, 35, a British citizen of Syrian descent, rammed a car into the grounds before stabbing worshippers during a six-minute rampage on Yom Kippur. Three other people were seriously injured. Three others have been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.
Rabbi Daniel Walker, who was in the synagogue at the time, paid tribute to Daulby and another injured man, Yoni Finlay, saying they "blocked the terrorist". He described Finlay as "one of the heroes of the Heaton Park community" who is recovering from terrible wounds. Detective Chief Superintendent Lewis Hughes said his sympathies were with the families and that specially trained officers were supporting them.
The attack was widely condemned by political leaders, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who called the attacker a "vile individual" who "attacked Jews because they are Jews, and attacked Britain because of our values". Postmortem examinations of the victims were due to take place later on Friday.
