Hashem Abedi, the brother of the Manchester Arena bomber, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after four prison officers were injured in an attack at HMP Frankland in Durham in April.
The incident, which occurred on 12 April, involved hot cooking oil being thrown at officers and a homemade weapon being used to stab them. Three officers required hospital treatment.
Abedi, 28, was already serving a minimum 55-year sentence for his role in helping his brother Salman Abedi plan the 2017 Manchester Arena suicide bombing, which killed 22 people.
Counter Terrorism Policing North East said Abedi had been charged with five offences: three counts of attempted murder, one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of unauthorised possession in prison of a knife or offensive weapon.
He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 18 September and remains in custody. The Ministry of Justice has announced a full review into how the attack, which occurred in a separation unit, was allowed to happen.
