Israel has shared new intelligence with the United States indicating a fresh Iranian plan to assassinate President Donald Trump, according to people familiar with the matter as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Longstanding Retaliation for Soleimani Killing
For years, Iran has spoken of retaliation against the US leader for the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, a top general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, during Trump's first term. Tensions have escalated to a full-scale war after the US and Israel carried out joint strikes on several key Iranian sites on February 28.
Trump Acknowledges Threats
The White House referred the Wall Street Journal to comments Trump made on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters in Türkiye, Trump said: "They want to take out the US leader—me. I'm on every list. I saw this morning, I'm on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I've been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn't last very long."
Mourning and Chants for Trump's Death
Iranians mourned Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed by the US-Israeli strikes at the start of the conflict. Mourners chanted for Trump's death, with some unveiling a banner that read "We Will Kill Trump." The funeral took place at the Shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad on July 9, 2026.
Ceasefire Collapses
On June 17, the US and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding to bring the war to a close within 60 days. Washington and Tehran had been working towards a lasting peace agreement to restore international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and settle the dispute over Iran's nuclear programme. However, Trump declared the ceasefire "over" at a NATO summit in Türkiye on Wednesday, telling reporters: "I don't want to deal with them anymore. They're scum."
