An 18-year-old ISIS supporter attacked a Catholic priest with an axe during Sunday Mass in Medan, Indonesia, after his backpack bomb failed to detonate. The incident occurred at St Yoseph Church, where hundreds of worshippers were present.
Father Albert Pandiangan, 60, was conducting the service when the assailant rushed the altar. The bomb only produced smoke, prompting the attacker to pull out an axe and slash the priest's arm. Congregants subdued the man and held him until police arrived.
Police found the suspect's ID card and a hand-drawn ISIS flag. He reportedly told officers he was not acting alone. The priest sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, has seen a series of attacks on religious minorities in recent years. Police have increased security at the church following the incident.
