An Iranian-UK dual national has been arrested in London on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts after the “attack plot” on an RAF base.
The 27-year-old was detained by counter-terrorism police in the borough of Westminster.
Arrest under Terrorism Act
He was arrested under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 by detectives investigating an alleged plot to target RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, which is used by US planes for bombing missions against Iran.
A second man, 26, who is a UK national, has also been questioned under caution. Police carried out searches at two properties.
Investigation and response
Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing Vicki Evans said: “The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry. As we’ve made clear, we’re looking at all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement. I’d like to thank the public for their continued support and patience whilst we work through this investigation.”
The latest arrests come after Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggested that Iran was behind the “plot” to target RAF Fairford.
Previous arrests and reaction
Five men in their 20s, all from London, who were arrested on Sunday 27 September, remain on police bail. Donald Trump has criticised the British authorities for releasing the five men on bail.
