A man has been arrested in the Paris suburb of Créteil after attempting to drive a car into a crowd of worshippers outside a mosque, according to police. No injuries were reported.
The suspect, who was driving an SUV, is said to have tried multiple times to ram the vehicle into pedestrians outside the mosque but was thwarted by high pavements and barriers. A witness described the car circling the mosque three times before accelerating towards the crowd.
Police have stated that the man’s motives are not yet clear, but French newspaper Le Parisien reported that he claimed to be seeking revenge for attacks linked to the Islamic State group that have killed dozens in Paris in recent years.
After crashing into another car, the suspect fled the scene but was later arrested at his home. The incident comes just over a week after a British man was charged with terrorism offences following a van attack on a Muslim community in London.
