Benidorm warning: New 'selfie steal' scam targets British tourists
Benidorm 'selfie steal' scam warning for Brits

A new scam known as the 'selfie steal' is affecting British tourists in Benidorm, according to a British woman who has lived in the area for 42 years.

Michelle Baker, who runs the Benidormforever Facebook page, said couples appearing 'overly friendly' ask tourists to take a photo and then invite them into the selfie. Once close, they deftly grab possessions such as purses, phones, watches and jewellery without the victim noticing.

How the scam works

Baker said: 'This is a new one and targets women mostly. A couple asks you to take a photo… they’re all smiles and overly friendly… then they ask you to get into their selfie.' She advised Brits to 'politely decline' such requests.

Writing on social media, she stressed Benidorm is very safe but warned that, like any popular city, there are sinister characters exploiting visitors.

Other scams highlighted

Baker also noted that phone thefts are common, with most devices stolen from tables. She said attractive women approach drunk men, offer a hug and quickly swipe phones and wallets from pockets. Phones are then sold on the black market.

She advised never to hand a phone to a stranger who claims to be lost and asks to use Google Maps. A final warning targeted airport buses: 'When you get off the airport bus, thieves target airport buses as you’ll be disoriented searching for luggage and watching for the kids and traffic. Keep your important bag under your arm.'

Tourists react

After her post, one person replied: 'My hubby had his phone stolen first time he went. It’s real.' Another said: 'My 16yo daughter had her iPhone nicked out of her front pocket last year didn't feel a thing… Gutting for her. Yeah so be very aware.' A third wrote: 'Good advice, hopefully people will take notice and have a stress free holiday.'
