A 26-year-old man abducted a five-year-old girl who was sleeping beside her parents in Surat, a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat, before sexually assaulting her. The incident occurred while the man was on parole from a 20-year sentence for raping a minor in 2021.
Attack during parole
As he fled with the child during his parole period, he fell, causing the girl to cry and alert local residents. Before he was caught, he sexually assaulted the child. Local residents then found him and handed him over to police.
Court adds 20 years to sentence
On Thursday, the court found Jamil Pathan guilty of raping the five-year-old girl and gave him another 20 years behind bars, Times of India reports. The Surat court ordered that the sentence run consecutively with the 20-year sentence Pathan is serving, taking his total jail term to 40 years. The court also ordered that financial compensation be paid to the victim.
