A 14-year-old girl in Gujarat, India, has alleged that her father raped her while her mother recorded the incident on a mobile phone. Police arrested both parents on Friday night after the girl managed to access a phone and called the emergency number 112 to report that she was being sexually assaulted.
Girl's call leads to arrests
According to police, the girl was brought to Anjar police station, where she told officers what had allegedly happened. Police said they recovered a mobile phone from the family and found photographs and a video linked to the offence.
Investigators said the girl's father had become angry after hearing her speaking to a boy who may have been a friend or acquaintance. He allegedly smashed her phone before assaulting and raping her in the presence of her mother, who police allege recorded the incident.
Earlier contact with police
Anjar police inspector H A Jadeja said the girl had first contacted the police control room two or three days earlier. However, before officers could reach the family home, the girl's father allegedly switched off the phone, making it difficult for police to trace their location.
On Friday, the girl was able to use another phone and contacted 112 again. Police then brought her to the station, registered a case and arrested both parents.
Family background and charges
The family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, had reportedly been living near Anjar for around six years and working as labourers. Police said the couple have four daughters, with the 14-year-old alleged victim being the eldest.
A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape and under India's Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for aggravated penetrative sexual assault. The investigation remains ongoing.
