Suspect Detained in City Centre Operation
A man wanted by French authorities in connection with a horrific child rape allegation has been apprehended in a major operation in Liverpool. Sujanth Ketheeswararasa, a 30-year-old Sri Lankan national, was located and detained by specialist officers from the National Crime Agency's National Extradition Unit.
The arrest took place in Liverpool city centre on Wednesday, 22nd November 2023. The NCA confirmed that the operation was conducted to execute a European arrest warrant issued by France.
Allegations and International Manhunt
Ketheeswararasa is accused of a serious sexual offence against a young girl in France. The specific details of the case are protected to safeguard the victim's identity, but the charges have led to a significant international search.
The French judicial system had classified him as a wanted individual, triggering cross-border cooperation that ultimately led investigators to Merseyside. The National Crime Agency, as the UK's lead agency for tackling organised and international crime, took the lead in the UK-based phase of the operation.
Next Steps and Extradition Process
Following his arrest in Liverpool, Sujanth Ketheeswararasa was processed and is now awaiting his initial appearance in a Westminster Magistrates' Court. This hearing will formally begin the extradition process to determine if he should be sent to France to face the allegations.
The successful arrest highlights the continued effectiveness of international law enforcement collaboration. An NCA spokesperson emphasised their commitment to working with global partners to locate and detain individuals wanted for serious crimes, ensuring they face justice.
