Inter Milan and Italy defender Alessandro Bastoni is reportedly under investigation by Italian police as part of a probe into child prostitution. The 27-year-old centre-back, widely regarded as one of the world's top defenders, has denied any wrongdoing.
Allegations and Investigation
According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Bastoni has been summoned to appear before prosecutors in Milan on Friday. He is alleged to have paid for sex with a 17-year-old girl in June 2020. Because she was a minor at the time, paid sex would constitute child prostitution under Italian law.
The investigation, led by the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office, is targeting an alleged escort ring operating through the Ma.De events company in Cinisello Balsamo. The company is suspected of hosting all-inclusive parties and events that regularly entertained footballers and other VIPs.
Lawyer's Statement and Player's Denial
Bastoni's lawyer, Salvatore Scuto, stated: "My client is very shaken. I can rule out that he ever engaged in paid sexual relations, let alone with minors." The girl in question has already been questioned and, while admitting to staying at Bastoni's house, she has denied having sex with the player.
Broader Probe and Impact
Bastoni is the first footballer under investigation in this probe, but around 70 names have been tied to the exclusive events, including players from AC Milan, Inter Milan, and other Serie A clubs, as well as athletes from other sports. It remains unclear whether any attendees were involved in soliciting prostitution or committing crimes.
The allegations cap a difficult period for Bastoni, who was sent off during Italy's crucial World Cup qualifying playoff against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Azzurri lost on penalties, missing a third consecutive World Cup. He and his family also faced social media abuse after an apparent dive in February's match against Juventus, which led to an opposition player being sent off.
