Benjamin Philip Leslie Gilbert, a 22-year-old man from Park Place, Risca, collapsed and died outside a working men's club on Commercial Street, an inquest opening has heard. The incident occurred on May 23, after Mr. Gilbert had been socializing with friends at KB Motors on the same street.
Circumstances of the Collapse
According to the inquest, held in Newport on Monday, Mr. Gilbert consumed alcohol, drugs, and nitrous oxide before leaving the garage. Shortly after, he collapsed outside the working men's club. Despite immediate assistance from members of the public and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene on May 24.
Post-Mortem and Inquest Details
A post-mortem examination was conducted on June 8, but final results are still pending. Coroner Rose Farmer stated that she is opening the inquest due to suspected drug intoxication. The full inquest is scheduled to take place on March 23, 2027.
Coroner Farmer expressed condolences to Mr. Gilbert's family, who were present at the hearing. The cause of death has not yet been determined, pending toxicology reports.
