A convicted sex offender who hid his paedophile past from his new girlfriend was exposed when Turkish border control denied them entry. Daniel Greaves, 34, of Ladysmith Road, Grimsby, was jailed for 10 months at Grimsby Crown Court after admitting two breaches of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Offender Concealed Convictions from Partner
Greaves had been convicted in December 2024 for four offences of engaging in sexual communications with a child. He received a two-year community order and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register. The SHPO banned him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under 16.
Despite these restrictions, Greaves began a relationship with a woman who had young children. He did not tell her about his convictions. The truth emerged in February 2025 when the couple attempted to travel to Turkey together. Border control officers in Turkey turned them away, and the woman learned of his offences. She immediately alerted the police.
Breaches Occurred in Public Settings
Prosecutor Craig Lowe told the court that in January 2025, Greaves and his girlfriend took her two children to a local pub for lunch. In February, they went to a circus, where Greaves was left unsupervised with the children while the woman went to the toilet. Both incidents violated the SHPO.
Lowe stated: "He had not told anyone about his convictions and he was a registered sex offender." The original offences involved Greaves communicating with decoys set up by paedophile hunters, who posed as 13- and 14-year-old girls. He sent messages requesting photographs, suggested meeting, and even proposed they shower together.
Judge Highlights Non-Negotiable Conditions
Defence barrister Michele Stuart-Lofthouse said Greaves had written a letter expressing "true remorse." She noted that the outings were in public settings and no harm occurred. However, Judge Richard Woolfall emphasised the seriousness of the breaches.
The judge said: "You were discussing with your probation officer that you were in a relationship and going on a date. You were asked if you had informed her of your previous conviction. You told it was not the right time, so probation gave you time and said that if you did not the police would." He added that Greaves had not disclosed that children were involved.
Judge Woolfall described the trip to the circus as particularly concerning, as Greaves was left alone with the children. He stated: "The conditions of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order are non-negotiable. They are there to protect children." He sentenced Greaves to 10 months in prison, noting he was "extremely fortunate" not to face more serious charges for the original communications.
