Liam Redmond snr, Liam Redmond jnr, and Luke Redmond admitted affray after a violent brawl erupted at a wake, leaving an HGV driver with permanent scarring and nine stitches to a facial injury.
Incident at Prenton Golf Club
The Redmonds, all of Holm Lane in Prenton, Wirral, were at a wake on 17 October 2024. Witnesses said some thought the defendants were inappropriately dressed. Manager Kate Verdin-Walsh said the atmosphere was good until staff alerted her to shouting.
She found 12 to 15 people in a circle, with Liam Redmond snr shouting at another man. After calming him down, the father and sons were removed, but the father dragged another man to the ground, sparking a large fight.
Violence and Injuries
One son threw a pint glass that hit Ms Verdin-Walsh on the head. Witness Ronald Hancox saw Redmond snr pressing his thumb inside another man's eye. Carl Hancox saw the father strike a man called Billy and force his thumbs into his eyes.
William Donaldson, who tried to protect his nephew, was struck multiple times and had his eyes gouged. He suffered a split nose, needed nine stitches, and had glass fragments in his eye, forcing him off work for two weeks.
Sentencing and Background
Liam Redmond snr, 61, has 16 previous convictions, including a 2022 affray at another wake. He received a nine-month suspended prison sentence, a rehabilitation activity requirement, and a 90-day alcohol abstinence requirement.
Liam Redmond jnr, 25, and Luke Redmond, 23, with clean records, received 12-month community orders with rehabilitation and unpaid work. All were ordered to pay £250 compensation to Mr Donaldson.
Judge Garrett Byrne said: "This was an entirely disgraceful event. All three of you should be ashamed of yourselves."
