A former Royal Marine who drove his car into crowds at a Liverpool FC victory parade has been jailed for 21 years and six months. Paul Doyle, 54, struck 134 people in two minutes during the attack on 26 May, causing life-changing injuries and widespread trauma.
Sentencing Doyle at Liverpool Crown Court, Judge Menary described his actions as 'truly shocking' and said they 'defy ordinary understanding'. The judge stated that dashcam footage showed Doyle was not acting in fear but out of 'inexplicable and undiluted fury'.
Doyle had pleaded guilty to 31 offences, including charges related to 21 adults and eight children. Victims ranged from six months to 77 years old. One survivor, Francesca Massey, said the attack reawakened trauma from the Manchester Arena bombing in 2017.
Merseyside Police said it was a 'miracle' no one was killed. Doyle was stopped by former soldier Dan Barr, who climbed into the car and held the gear selector in park. Doyle told officers: 'I've just ruined my family's life.'
The court heard Doyle had a criminal record from the 1990s, including biting off a man's ear in a pub brawl, but had not been in trouble for 30 years. A former Royal Marine colleague described him as having 'a horrendous flash to bang' temper.
