Despicable rapist jailed for historic sex offences in Fife

Robert Haggart, 53, has been sentenced to five years in prison for historic sexual offences, including rape, committed against two girls in the Cowdenbeath area between 1987 and 1992.

Haggart was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday after being found guilty earlier this month following a trial.

Investigation launched in 2022

The investigation was launched by specialist police officers in August 2022 after one of the women, who had been abused as a child, came forward.

Police Scotland commended the bravery of the two women in coming forward and reporting him.

Police praise victims' courage

Detective Sergeant Ross French from Fife Public Protection Unit said: “It is down to the strength and bravery of these women in coming forward and speaking to the police that Robert Haggart is now facing the consequences of his despicable actions.

“This outcome shows there is no time bar to reporting sexual offences and Police Scotland is committed to bringing those responsible to justice, regardless of when the crimes occurred.

“I would encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual crime to come forward and report it, knowing we will investigate thoroughly. We have specially trained officers who will support you throughout, as well as partner agencies.”
