Former England striker Andy Carroll has confirmed that Kevin Adams, a dance coach and BBC Fame Academy star, sexually assaulted him. Adams was jailed in 2023 after being convicted at Chelmsford Crown Court.
The former Newcastle striker confirmed Adams committed the offence after the disgraced TV star’s name was made publicly available in court documents. He said: “Now that Kevin Adams has been named in court documents as my abuser, I can confirm it.”
Assault and aftermath
Dance instructor Adams assaulted Carroll while he was sleeping naked. The England ace kicked him out and then knocked him unconscious when he attempted to return.
After the row Adams tried to portray himself as the victim and told cops he had been hit for no reason. But a judge later told him: “You spun a literally incredible tale in which you painted yourself as the victim. You’ve actually started to believe your own lies.
“In your narrative, you were the put-upon reluctant friend doing no more than helping out. The end of your unbelievable tale was that you were the victim of the most serious sexual assaults yourself.
“However incredible your account, it seems to me that you’ve actually started to believe your own lies. I cannot find a realistic prospect of rehabilitation in your case.”
Jail sentence and public statement
Back in 2023 Adams, now 59, was thrown behind bars for 20 months for the sexual assault. Ex-Liverpool star Carroll bravely wrote of the devastating 2019 attack in autobiography Owning It without naming his abuser.
Speaking to the Sun on Sunday Carroll said: “Hopefully now I can finally start to put this chapter behind me. I just ask that people don’t constantly share pictures of my abuser alongside me.
“I don’t want to keep seeing his face or being reminded of him every time this story is spoken about. I’m ready to move forward. This had a devastating impact on my life and loved ones.”
Carroll’s account in his autobiography
In the book, Carroll writes: “Other things I’d quite like to forget but can’t. Something happened to me a few years ago that was so traumatic I only decided to include it in this book at the very last minute.
“I was sexually assaulted, there I said it. Scary to even think about and only a few people knew about it before now. Me and (current partner) Lou Teasdale spent a lot of time discussing whether to mention it in this book or not.
“I avoided my publisher for so long that they probably suspected I got cold feet. Scary to talk about but it’s made me the person I am today as much as any of the good stuff. And if me talking about it helps just one person then good, it will have been worth it.”
Several passages later he pulls back the lid on the horror sexual assault. The Ex-Liverpool star writes: “I sleep naked and when I wake up this guy is under the duvet.”
He writes: “I smack him as hard as I can and he hits the deck. I grab hold of his feet and drag him out on the driveway. I go back inside, lock the door and call the police and the nanny.
“Then it suddenly occurs to me, what if I killed him?
“He regains consciousness just as the police turn up and immediately starts telling the police I hit him for no reason. As it is the police arrest him and I have to go to the station as well.”
He adds: “What happened to me affected every facet of my life. I’d think about it every day, making it difficult to focus on anything else, including football.
“The trauma of what happened to me hasn’t gone away.”
