An FBI agent has testified about the gruesome discovery of nearly 200 decaying bodies at a Colorado funeral home, describing bodily fluids several inches deep, flies, and maggots throughout the building. The testimony came during a hearing for Carie Hallford, co-owner of the Return to Nature Funeral Home, who faces charges including abuse of a corpse.
Prosecutors revealed text messages between the Hallfords showing financial pressures and fears of being caught. In one 2020 exchange, Jon Hallford suggested disposing of bodies by digging a hole with lye or setting them on fire, according to investigator Kevin Clark. Another text from last year mentioned getting 'people juice' on him before ordering a cheeseburger.
The remains, including adults, infants, and fetuses, were stored at room temperature in a neglected building in Penrose. Some families received fake ashes instead of their loved ones' cremated remains. The Hallfords were arrested in Oklahoma after allegedly fleeing Colorado.
Carie Hallford's attorney did not challenge the evidence except for cellphone data. Jon Hallford remains in custody with bond lowered to $100,000. The case continues with a hearing scheduled for next week.
