A man died in a high-speed fireball crash after renting a Lamborghini to pick up his pal from prison, a court has heard. Mohammed Shaan Hussain, 20, hired the Urus luxury SUV before picking up Humaira Batool, then 22, from her Bradford home at around 4am on December 21, 2022.
Planned trip to HMP Leeds
The pair planned to collect a friend from HMP Leeds. They swapped seats in the Lamborghini, before driving along the rain-soaked M62 at speeds of up to 143mph.
As the Lamborghini passed Scott Hall Farm - known for being the farm in the 'middle of the motorway' - it was travelling at around 120mph. But seconds later, the supercar smashed into a barrier, overturned and burst into flames.
Rescue efforts thwarted by fire
Batool escaped the wreckage but Mr Hussain was trapped inside as motorists desperately tried to rescue him. She is now standing trial at Leeds Crown Court accused of causing his death by dangerous driving.
Prosecutor Christopher Dunn said CCTV showed Batool initially sitting in the passenger seat after being picked up, before the pair swapped places at a set of traffic lights. Mr Hussain moved into the passenger seat while Batool took the wheel, and they planned to travel to HMP Leeds to meet their friend, Mr Dunn said.
Mr Dunn said the Lamborghini was driven 'at grossly excessive speeds' despite the wet conditions. The journey ended as the car came off the carriageway between junctions 22 and 23, near Ripponden.
Trial continues
Drivers who had just been overtaken by the stricken supercar stopped and desperately tried to save Mr Hussain. But Mr Dunn said their rescue efforts were thwarted by a fire and an explosion.
Batool was later found on a grass verge near the motorway by a second group of witnesses. Mr Dunn said: "Batool told witnesses the flames had melted the seatbelt, enabling her to escape the vehicle."
Batool denies causing death by dangerous driving. The trial continues.
