Woman charged after car crashes into Edinburgh basement

A woman has been charged after a car crashed into a basement on a busy street in Edinburgh. The incident took place at around 1.45pm on Friday, October 9, when officers were alerted to a crash on Rutland Square in the west end of the city.

Emergency response and cordon

Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, rushed to the scene. The area was quickly taped off by police as firefighters worked to free the stricken vehicle, reports Edinburgh Live.

Photos from the crash site show the white car lying in the basement of a building, positioned with its front bumper facing outwards, having ploughed through the railings on the street. Cones and a further cordon can be seen around the front of the car and missing railings.

Driver charged

The female driver was taken to hospital to be checked over and has since been charged with a road traffic offence.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1.35pm on Friday, 9 October, 2026 we were called to a report that a car had crashed into a building at Rutland Square, Edinburgh."

"Emergency services attended and the female driver of the car was taken to hospital to be checked over. She has been charged in connection with a road traffic offence and will be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal."

Fire service statement

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 1.45pm on Friday, 9 October to reports of a car colliding with a building on Rutland Square, Edinburgh."

"Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene, where firefighters are working to make the area safe. One female casualty was assessed at the scene."
