Uber driver jailed 16 years for knifepoint rape and child images

Adam Daley, a 33-year-old Uber driver, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for raping a female passenger at knifepoint and possessing indecent images of children. The attack occurred in December last year, and Daley was arrested within an hour after the victim immediately contacted police.

Details of the Attack

The victim, a woman in her 20s, reported the rape at 5:30 am on December 29 after Daley made sexualised comments during the journey. He pulled over in a layby, claiming he needed to use the toilet, then ordered her to the front seat and forced her to perform oral sex at knifepoint, threatening to kill her.

Police used CCTV and ANPR cameras to track Daley's vehicle, securing vital forensic and digital evidence. When confronted, Daley attempted to destroy evidence by grabbing and stamping on his mobile phone.

Conviction and Sentencing

Following a trial last month, Daley was found guilty of one count of rape, one count of sexual assault, one count of possession of a bladed article, and one count of threats to kill. At sentencing on July 10 at Leicester Crown Court, he also pleaded guilty to two counts of making indecent images of children, which were found on his phone.

Judge handed down a 16-year prison sentence, along with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order prohibiting contact with the victim. Additionally, a blood sample tested positive for cocaine, resulting in a 20-month driving ban, a £200 fine, £85 court costs, and an £80 victim surcharge.

Police Statements

Detective Constable Matt Smith commended the victim's bravery: “I want to commend the victim in this case during what has been an extremely difficult six months. Her actions that night and the strength and bravery she has shown during the investigation and trial has ensured a dangerous individual is now behind bars.”

Senior Investigation Officer, Detective Inspector Majid Zaveri, added: “The courage of the victim and the professionalism and dedication of the response and investigation officers has led to this outcome. If you are a victim of a sexual offence, please know that we are here to listen to you, to help you and to support you.”

Possible Further Victims

Detective Constable Smith noted that Daley's role as an Uber driver means there could be additional victims who have not yet come forward. He urged anyone with information to report to police, who have specialist officers to handle sexual assault cases.
