Two dead in Co Down trench incident as road remains closed

Two people have died following an incident in Crossnacreevy, Co Down, prompting a major rescue operation and road closures. Motorists have been urged to avoid the area for the time being.

Emergency response launched after reports of trapped people

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy on Friday morning following reports that people were "trapped in a trench". Three ambulances and two hazard response teams were among those dispatched, as well as two specialist rescue teams from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.

Health & Safety Executive NI inspectors were also sent to the area to make enquiries into the incident. Upon arriving at the scene, officers closed off a section of the street between Houston Road and Knockbreda Road to allow 999 crews to carry out their operation.

Fatalities confirmed by local politicians

DUP leader and East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson confirmed the two deaths, writing on social media: "Sadly, it has been confirmed that two people have lost their lives following an incident in Crossnacreevy. My thoughts are with their families and loved ones at this devastating time, and with the emergency services responding to the incident. Ballygowan Road will remain closed. Please avoid the area and use an alternative route."

Alliance East Belfast MLA Peter McReynolds expressed his sadness, saying: "This is an absolutely heartbreaking incident, and my thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, as well as the emergency service personnel on-scene who have had to respond to such an unthinkable tragedy."

He added: "I hope they’re receiving all the support they need at what will be an incredibly difficult time. Whilst the Ballygowan Road remains closed as the incident is ongoing, I’d encourage everyone to avoid the area as much as possible and allow the emergency services to carry out their work."

Road remains closed as enquiries continue

Earlier on Friday, the PSNI stated: "The Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy is closed. Emergency services are in attendance. You are advised to take another route for your journey." The road remains closed as the incident is ongoing.
