A Las Vegas jury has convicted former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon in the 1996 drive-by shooting of hip hop icon Tupac Shakur. The verdict, reached in less than three hours, closes a case that had remained one of music's biggest mysteries for three decades.
Guilty verdict ends 30-year mystery
Davis was found guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, with the intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang in the killing of Shakur. He remains the only person ever charged in connection with the fatal shooting near the Las Vegas Strip.
Prosecutors did not allege that Davis himself fired the shots that killed Shakur, instead accusing him of orchestrating the killing.
Key testimony and evidence
In a police interview in 2008, Davis confirmed that his nephew Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson fired the shots that killed Tupac. The jury heard last week that Davis was in the car with Anderson when the shots were fired, killing the 25-year-old hip-hop superstar.
At the time of the 2008 interview, Anderson had been dead for a decade.
