A student teacher has admitted assaulting her boyfriend by hitting him on the head with a glass during a row in a Newcastle city centre pub. Jamie Henderson, 20, was arrested after the incident at The Five Swans, where the couple had been drinking and arguing about the potential end of their relationship.
Court hears details of the incident
Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard that Henderson reached for a glass and struck the man on the head, causing an injury that required hospital treatment. The police were called, and Henderson, of Chathill Terrace, in Walker, was arrested.
Chike Anieto, prosecuting, said the incident occurred at The Five Swans on December 20 last year. "At that location, there was an incident," he said. "The defendant assaulted [the victim] by hitting him on the head. She used a glass to hit him on the head."
Victim declines to cooperate
The injured party refused to engage with the prosecution and declined to provide a witness statement. He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for medical treatment. Mr Anieto described it as "basically a verbal dispute that escalated and the defendant took a glass and hit the injured party."
During a subsequent police interview, Henderson refused to answer all questions.
Defence and next steps
Neil Connell, defending, said Henderson, who has no previous convictions, was studying for a teaching degree at the time but had decided to quit the course as a result of the offence. He added: "They were arguing in the public house. The argument was one about the relationship coming to an end. There is a background to this case."
Magistrates adjourned the case for the preparation of a pre-sentence report. Henderson was released on unconditional bail and is due to appear at the same court on October 28.
