Transfer ban threatens Ramsey's rebuild
Aaron Ramsey has suffered a significant setback just two weeks into his tenure as Oxford United head coach. The 35-year-old former Cardiff City star replaced Matt Bloomfield at the Kassam Stadium after Oxford's relegation to League One. However, his plans to refresh the squad have been dealt a massive blow, according to The Athletic, with the club set to be handed a temporary transfer ban. An announcement is expected in due course.
Salary Cost Management Protocol violation
The problem relates to League One's Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP), which requires clubs to demonstrate they can fund their planned player expenditure and afford their playing budget ahead of the new season. Oxford United have allegedly failed to provide all the required funding, prompting the English Football League (EFL) to take action. As a result, Ramsey will have to focus on working with his current squad as he aims to guide Oxford back to the Championship.
Only one summer signing so far
Oxford have made just one signing this summer, bringing in centre-back Frankie Kent on a free transfer after his departure from Scottish club Hearts. No further new arrivals will be possible until the transfer ban issue is resolved.
Ramsey's ambition and vision
Ramsey, who had a brief interim spell in charge of his boyhood club Cardiff last year, expressed his excitement about the Oxford role. He said: "It's an honour and privilege to be appointed head coach of Oxford United. From my discussions with the club, I can sense the ambition and desire for success, which gives me great excitement about this opportunity." He added: "This is a moment I have been preparing for over many years. I've played under some of the best managers in the game and experienced high-pressure environments throughout my career. I want to use what I've learnt to bring a culture of high standards, professionalism and work ethic to this talented group of players."
Ramsey's commitment to success
Ramsey outlined his vision for the team: "My teams will play with a clear identity, be built on elite habits, with a commitment to improving every day. I want a squad that fights for the badge until the end, and one that makes our supporters proud. I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and can't wait to get started, meet the players and connect with our supporters as we strive to bring success."
