Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and will appear in court next month. The England international, who is currently without a club, also faces charges of possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen after his arrest in May.
Court date set for Basingstoke magistrates
Sterling is due to appear before magistrates in Basingstoke on September 15. The former Liverpool and Manchester City winger was arrested following an incident close to Minley Interchange after motorists rang 999 having seen a vehicle swerve across the M3 before 9am.
Sterling was initially bailed pending further enquiries. No other vehicles were involved in the collision, which took place on the M3 southbound on 28 May, 2026.
Police statement on charges
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary told The Sun: “A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3.
“Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen.
“The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on 28 May, 2026.
“No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates' court on 15 September.”
Career background
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, was made illegal when reclassified as a class C drug in November 2023.
Sterling joined Dutch club Feyenoord earlier in the year after ending his contract with Chelsea via mutual consent in January. The veteran played eight times for the Eredivisie side but saw his deal with the team end in May.
The forward has endured a difficult few years in football after being unable to recreate his trophy-laden success at Manchester City after moving to Chelsea. Sterling signed a seven-year deal with the Blues in 2022 and went on loan to Arsenal in 2024/25, but could not convince the Gunners to sign him permanently.
The QPR academy ace spent seven years at City, winning four Premier League titles in his time at the Etihad. He joined the club in 2015 having established himself at Liverpool, winning the Golden Boy award in 2014.
