Christian G. Payton, 27, a physical education teacher, has been charged with four felony counts of official misconduct and four felony counts of distributing harmful material to a minor, along with four misdemeanour counts of distributing harmful material to a minor.

Allegations and arrest

Payton turned herself in to authorities on Wednesday (August 5) after allegations surfaced that she sent sexually explicit images of herself to a 17-year-old student while working as an athletic trainer at Indian Creek High School in Illinois.

Court documents allege the images were sent on April 2, 4, 7, and 11.

Release conditions

Payton was released under the Illinois SAFE-T Act, a 2021 criminal justice reform law that eliminated cash bail for defendants awaiting trial. Conditions of her release include no contact with the alleged victim or anyone under 18, and she is prohibited from leaving Illinois. She must also report to the court's probation department.

School district response

Indian Creek School District Superintendent Chad Willis described the allegations as “deeply concerning and disappointing”. In a statement, he said: “The safety and well-being of our students is and always will be our highest priority. Indian Creek School District is cooperating fully with law enforcement and the appropriate authorities as they conduct their investigation.”

Payton, a 2017 graduate of Rochelle Township High School, is due to appear in court on August 27.
