Derrick Callella, a 42-year-old man from California, has pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment using a telecommunication device in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie. The plea was announced in a press release from the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
Details of the Crime
On February 4, 2026, Callella called and sent text messages to the Guthrie family, inquiring about a bitcoin transfer. He admitted that he knew an earlier ransom demand had been made and that his intent was to harass the family by seeking information about the case. Nancy Guthrie was reported missing earlier this year after she failed to appear at church.
Legal Consequences
For each count of harassment using a telecommunication device, Callella faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both, along with one year of supervised release. The sentencing will be determined by the court.
Investigation and Family Pleas
Investigators have revealed that the FBI received several fake ransom demands, but some may potentially be legitimate and are still under investigation. Savannah Guthrie has made multiple emotional appeals for anyone with information about her mother’s disappearance to come forward. Nancy Guthrie is one of three children, and the family remains desperate for answers.
