A university student has described how a nightclub assault left him with a broken nose and lasting anxiety over his appearance. The victim told Cardiff Crown Court he now constantly looks over his shoulder and feels his nose is slightly disfigured.
Assault at District nightclub
Adam Mian, 21, of Uneeda Drive in Greenford, Ealing, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court to be sentenced for assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He pleaded guilty at a previous hearing on June 9. The assault occurred at District nightclub in Cardiff on March 26 last year. The victim was taken to A&E, where he underwent a CT scan, received painkillers, and was referred to the ear, nose and throat department. In April, he went to the Royal Berkshire Hospital for treatment to realign his broken nose, as the lower part had deviated with bone pushed inward on the left side.
Victim impact statement
Prosecuting barrister Hannah Head read the victim's impact statement, which detailed the emotional toll. The victim, a university student, said: “After the incident, it was a really difficult time for me as a university student, attending multiple hospital appointments which affected my performance, especially with my exams. Since the incident, I have been suffering emotionally with insecurities over my appearance. I think about the incident and my broken nose twice a day and feel anxiety whilst out in public. I feel my nose is still slightly disfigured and my breathing has been affected, especially during my sleep. Since the incident, I feel very anxious and constantly look over my shoulder, anxious and scared that something might happen again.”
Court proceedings
Mian was interviewed by police on September 7, where he provided a prepared statement claiming self-defence but gave no comment to other questions. The court heard the pair were not known to each other. Recorder Simon Hughes told Mian the incident amounted to a complete loss of control and adjourned the case for a pre-sentence report. Mian will next appear at Cardiff Crown Court on September 3 and has been granted unconditional bail.
