Ian Smith, 45, admitted attacking a man at East Kilbride Bus Station, causing multiple fractures to his face. He appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court.
Details of the assault
Smith admitted that, while acting with others, he punched and kicked his victim to his severe injury in Olympia Way. The assault happened around 6pm on August 31 last year.
Daisy Bentley, prosecuting, said the area was busy with pedestrians at the time. She told the court: "The man was at the bus station with Ian Smith and others. An altercation took place and the victim was punched on the face then kicked while he was on the ground."
Victim's injuries
A member of the public contacted the police. Officers found the victim had severe swelling about the face and around both eyes. He was conveyed to hospital and x-rays showed multiple fractures to both sides of his face and his forehead. He was kept in hospital so an eye injury could be assessed and was discharged the next day.
The court heard Smith also needed hospital treatment for an eye injury. He told police he had acted in self-defence.
Court proceedings
Smith admitted previous convictions. He had been freed from prison in May last year on a supervised release order. Defence lawyer Andy Thomson told the court: "He had complied fully with that order and found full time employment. There has been ongoing social work contact with him."
Smith has been in prison since his arrest almost a year ago. Sentence was deferred for background reports and he was again remanded in custody.
