John Ritter, beloved for his role as Jack Tripper on the ABC sitcom Three's Company, died at age 54 on September 11, 2003, just hours after falling ill on the set of his family sitcom 8 Simple Rules... for Dating My Teenage Daughter. His wife, Amy Yasbeck, believes he could have survived if doctors had correctly diagnosed his condition sooner.
Sudden Illness and Misdiagnosis
While attending rehearsals at the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California, Ritter experienced nausea, heavy sweating, chest pains, and vomiting. He was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, across the road from the studio—the same hospital where he was born. He arrived at 6pm, but five hours later, his family received the heartbreaking news that he had died.
Emergency physicians initially believed Ritter had suffered a heart attack, but they were mistaken. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and he was rushed into surgery with a diagnosis of aortic dissection—a tear in the inner lining of the main artery that allows blood to force through the arterial wall layers. Had this been identified earlier, it was contended, the actor could have survived.
Legal Action and Settlement
In the wake of his passing, Yasbeck pursued a negligence claim against a Burbank hospital, along with two wrongful death lawsuits against two individual doctors. One physician had treated Ritter on the night he died, while the other had interpreted a body scan from 2001 that revealed arterial damage. Several lawsuits were settled out of court, totaling $14 million (approximately £10 million). The jury split 9–3 in favor of the two doctors, who were cleared of all charges.
Yasbeck has spoken candidly about her belief that her husband would still be alive today had he received the correct diagnosis sooner. She said: "John didn't have a chance. He was never given that chance."
Legacy and Family
Ritter left behind four children, several of whom pursued acting careers. His son Jason earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his performance in Parenthood and appeared in Joan of Arcadia, Gravity Falls, and Frozen 2. His other son, Tyler, has taken roles in NCIS, Modern Family, and The McCarthys.
