A trio of murderers who stabbed a child killer to death in prison, a thug who attacked police at Manchester Airport, and a rapist who watched an innocent man serve 17 years are among those jailed in Greater Manchester in June 2026. Courts across the region handed down lengthy sentences for a range of offences, from murder and rape to drug trafficking and dangerous driving.
Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley
Jamie Varley, who murdered and abused 13-month-old Preston Davey, received a whole life order, meaning he will never be released. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was jailed for 25 years for participating in a sexual attack on the baby four days before his death. Varley, a former teacher, treated Preston as his 'personal plaything' over four months. McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, turned a blind eye and joined the attack on July 24, 2023.
Mark 'The Iceman' Fellows, Lee Newell and David Taylor
Three convicted murderers—Mark Fellows, 45; David Taylor, 64; and Lee Newell, 57—were given whole life orders for stabbing child killer Kyle Bevan, 33, to death in HMP Wakefield. Bevan was serving life for murdering his two-year-old stepdaughter. The trio attacked Bevan in his cell on November 4, 2025, stabbing him 25 times with improvised weapons. Fellows had previously killed gangland figures Paul Massey and John Kinsella. Newell had murdered child killer Subhan Anwar in 2013. Taylor had admitted killing Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin and attempting to murder a police officer. All three received new whole life orders.
Mohammed Fahir Amaaz
Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 21, was jailed for three-and-a-half years for assaulting two female police officers during a brawl at Manchester Airport in July 2024. PC Lydia Ward suffered a broken nose, and PC Ellie Cook was knocked to the ground. The attack was captured on police bodycam footage.
Dominic Miller
Dominic Miller, 40, of Glossop, was jailed for 24 weeks for shoplifting from Tesco, Heron Foods, and Asda, despite a criminal behaviour order banning him from every Tesco and B&M Bargains in Derbyshire.
Amaar Abid
Amaar Abid, of Oldham, was jailed for 38 weeks for dangerous driving after leading police on a chase that included driving the wrong way up the M60. The incident occurred on June 10, 2025, when he drove through a red light and fled officers.
Daryl Berman
Daryl Berman, 72, was found guilty of murdering her husband David Berman, 84, at their home in Prestwich on March 13, 2025. She claimed it was an accident, but jurors rejected her account. She was remanded for sentencing on July 3.
Asad Hussain
Asad Hussain, of Heald Green, was jailed for eight years for stalking, assault, and failing to provide device passwords. He used a fake Tinder account to invite strangers to his ex's home after a brief relationship in 2024. Judge Leeming noted the 'substantial impact' on the victim, who installed extensive security measures.
Tariq Sarwar
Tariq Sarwar, 59, of Alderley Edge, was jailed for transferring £3 million to avoid debts after flouting a director disqualification order. He set up companies in his wife's name in 2013, the same year he was banned. Christopher Francis, 40, received a suspended sentence.
Gary Day-Davies
Gary Day-Davies, 55, a teacher in Salford, was jailed for 15 years for abusing a girl at school and home after plying her with drugs and alcohol. He claimed the victim held a 'grudge' against him.
Curtis Rogerson
Curtis Rogerson, 45, was jailed for pepper spraying two men in a van after a dispute over a parking space in Lymm, Cheshire. The substance was Capsaicinoids, found in pepper sprays. The victims recovered.
Mohammed Hassan Alam, Asad Ali and Sonia Ali
Three people were jailed for a machete and sword attack on a man at his home in Rochdale as part of a gang feud. The victim's mother was also injured. Alam, 26; Asad Ali, 31; and Sonia Ali, 34, were sentenced for their roles.
Emma Hurley
Emma Hurley, 44, was jailed for grooming and having sex with a boy under 16 with additional educational needs. They exchanged 775 calls and over 10,000 messages in two months. Cannabis, nitrous oxide, a machete, and knives were found in her car.
Freddie Shelley
Freddie Shelley was jailed for 10 months for burgling a house in Warrington but fleeing empty-handed on a bike. He was identified via CCTV.
Shaun Orchard
Shaun Orchard, 23, was jailed for three years and two months for causing a high-speed crash while drunk and on cocaine, leaving PC Rushton with horrific injuries. Orchard stole his stepdad's car after drinking and taking drugs.
Taylor Smyth
Taylor Smyth, 26, was jailed for running over his ex-partner twice while drunk after a failed attempt at reconciliation. The victim suffered multiple fractures and lost four teeth.
George Stables
George Stables, 34, of Doncaster, was jailed for two years and three months for importing 33.95kg of cannabis from Thailand, with a street value of £290,000. He told border officers: 'I'm in a lot of trouble.'
Rhys Meikle
Rhys Meikle, 31, of Openshaw, was jailed for four years for child sexual abuse offences. He claimed to be a 'paedophile hunter' as a cover story. He distributed indecent images and attempted to arrange child sexual abuse while on bail.
Ross Fathi, Jack Wright and Iain Potter
Three men were jailed for running an industrial-scale mail order drugs gang from a warehouse in Bury. Iain Potter, 45, and Jack Wright, 30, received 11 years and four months each; Ross Fathi, 46, got six years. Police seized cocaine, MDMA, ketamine, LSD, and other drugs.
Paul Quinn
Paul Quinn, 52, was sentenced to 21 years in prison plus three years on licence for raping a woman in 2003, a crime for which Andrew Malkinson spent 17 years in prison before being cleared. Quinn was convicted of two counts of rape, GBH, and attempted choking.
David Jack
David Jack, 59, was jailed for life with a minimum of 26 years and six months for murdering Paul Anderson in December 2025. He had previously killed Rampersaud Ramnarine in 2013. Jack bragged about the earlier killing and was described as 'highly dangerous'.
Megan Murphy
Megan Murphy, 26, a personal trainer, was jailed for six years and banned from driving for eight years for causing the death of Darryl Tomlinson, 31, by dangerous driving. She drove over him twice in Wigan in January 2025 and called him a 'smackhead' while he was under her car.
Eric Mwangi
Eric Mwangi, 35, was jailed for three months for smashing windscreens of 15 cars with a metal bar in Trafford, causing nearly £4,000 damage. The attack was described as a 'revenge rampage'.
Ridgan Taga and Leonard Tota
Ridgan Taga, 26, and Leonard Tota, 26, were jailed for a large-scale cannabis grow in Bolton. They are due to be deported after serving their sentences.
Lara and Andrew Boyd
Andrew Boyd, 41, and Lara Boyd, 40, of Tameside, were jailed for secretly photographing and filming an underage child while under the influence of cocaine and alcohol. They had a 'sexual interest' in the child and exchanged disgusting WhatsApp messages.
