Newly released surveillance footage has offered a glimpse into the daily life of convicted child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell while she was held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. The video, dated July 1, 2020, shows Maxwell in an orange prison uniform, tidying her cell and reading a book.
The footage was made public following the release of a large tranche of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell's former boyfriend and accomplice. In the video, Maxwell is seen cleaning her sink, folding her bedding, and eventually lying down to read, before yawning and reclining further.
The Metropolitan Detention Center is known for its poor conditions, with a former warden describing it as “one of the most troubled” prisons in the United States. Maxwell has since been transferred to a low-security facility in Texas, nicknamed “Club Fed,” after a lengthy meeting with Donald Trump's deputy attorney general.
Maxwell's life in prison contrasts sharply with her previous lifestyle, which included frequent travel on Epstein's private jet and visits to his private island. She was photographed with high-profile figures such as Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Prince Andrew.
Since her incarceration, Maxwell has reportedly sought a pardon or commutation from the Trump administration. In October last year, Trump acknowledged he had the power to release her and said he would “take a look” at the possibility, but has not commented further.
