Kevin Kerjean, a 31-year-old French national born in the Central African Republic, has been charged with the rape and murder of a two-year-old girl who was found dead in a Surrey property on Thursday evening. He faces charges of rape of a child under 13, sexual assault of a child under 13, and murder.
Discovery and Initial Response
Officers were called to an address in Pyrcroft Road, Chertsey, around 5:40pm on Thursday following reports of a concern for safety. Upon arrival, they discovered the toddler deceased inside the flat. The Major Crime Team has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Surrey Police have stated that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage. A significant police presence remains in the area as inquiries continue.
Court Proceedings
Kerjean appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court on Saturday, where he was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Guildford Crown Court on Monday, 29 June.
Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen expressed condolences, saying: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the child’s family, as well as all those who knew her. Our teams are working hard to build a picture of what happened, and a significant police presence will remain in Pyrcroft Road over the coming days.”
Community Response
On Friday, bouquets of flowers were left at the entrance to Syward Place, a flat complex on the corner of Pyrcroft Road and Bell Bridge Road, as the community mourns the loss. Groenen added: “We appreciate that the incident itself, as well as the significant police presence, will be concerning for residents and we would like to thank them for their cooperation as we conduct our investigation.”
