A former teacher has been found not guilty of raping a woman, but the jury was unable to reach verdicts on two further allegations and has been discharged.
Acquittal on 2001 allegation
Daniel Gravell was acquitted of indecently assaulting and raping a teenager in his bedroom at the family home in Johnston near Carmarthen in 2001 following a two-week trial. The defence case was that the alleged incident "simply never happened".
Gravell had also been accused of raping a teenager outside the Carmarthen Athletic RFC clubhouse in Carmarthen town centre in 2005, and of raping a third woman in a bedroom at the Baltic Inn hotel in Pontyates - which he was running at the time - in 2021.
Consensual encounters claimed
Gravell, of Porth-y-Plas, Johnstown, Carmarthen, accepted he had sex with both women on the days in question but insisted they had been consensual sexual encounters.
After deliberating for more than seven hours, a jury at Swansea Crown Court was discharged on Monday after failing to reach verdicts on the 2005 and 2021 allegations.
Possible retrial considered
Judge Paul Thomas KC gave the prosecution seven days to consider whether it was seeking a retrial. Discharging the jurors, the judge thanked them for their service and the attention they had given the case.
