Three Doctors Shot Dead in Rio Beachside Attack; Brother of Politician Among Victims

Three doctors have been killed and another wounded in a shooting at a beachside restaurant in Rio de Janeiro, with Brazilian officials suspecting a politically motivated attack. The victims were in town from São Paulo for an orthopedics conference.

Security footage shows a group of black-clad gunmen emerging from a car and opening fire on the victims' table in the Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood. Among the dead is the brother of federal lawmaker Sâmia Bomfim, who is married to fellow lawmaker Glauber Braga.

Brazilian Justice Minister Flávio Dino said the federal police would join the investigation given the possibility it was motivated by the actions of lawmakers. Bomfim and Braga belong to the same leftist party as the late Rio city councillor Marielle Franco, shot dead in 2018.
