Coronation Street's Debbie Webster, played by Sue Devaney, is facing court after being charged with three counts of death by dangerous driving and excess alcohol following a horrific crash in the Corriedale crossover with Emmerdale. The incident left vicar Billy Mayhew dead after the minibus he was driving was involved in a pile-up.
Debbie was a passenger in a car driven by Carl Webster, who had been drinking heavily after Debbie's wedding to Ronnie. When Carl was hospitalised, medics discovered an underlying heart condition had sent him into shock. Debbie, who has dementia, claimed she was driving, swapping seats with Carl because he felt unwell. However, police are sceptical, noting her impaired state.
Debbie's brother Kevin is convinced Carl is the real driver, pointing out that the bruising from her seatbelt is on the right side, inconsistent with her story. He warned Debbie she will go to jail because of Carl. Carl, who had an affair with James Bailey, has moved in with Debbie, much to Kevin's horror.
Kevin confronted Carl in hospital, accusing him of dragging Debbie's body into the driver's seat to save himself. Carl laughed off the accusation, and Kevin threatened him. In the final scene, Debbie looked in the mirror, realising Kevin might be right about the bruises.
