Representatives of Jamie Carragher have responded after HMRC filed a petition to have the Liverpool FC legend declared bankrupt, insisting the matter will be settled today.
Court listings were filed yesterday, showing that the case was filed against James Lee Duncan Carragher by a solicitor to HMRC, the UK government department responsible for tax collection. The case was listed for yesterday, August 27, with Mr Carragher listed as a litigant in person.
Spokesperson issues assurance
A representative for the Sky Sport pundit moved to provide assurances that the matter would be cleared up quickly and insisted the ex-Reds defender will settle the issue today.
A spokesperson for Jamie Carragher told the ECHO: “This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further, and will be resolved imminently.”
Carragher's Liverpool career
Carragher is one of Liverpool's most recognisable former players, having made 737 appearances for the Reds in a glittering career. He is ranked as the club's second-time highest appearance maker behind Ian Callaghan.
The defender won a Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups and a UEFA Cup during his stellar career at Anfield.
Post-retirement career and HMRC response
Since retiring from professional football, the Bootle-born star has become one of the most high-profile football pundits working in the game, working for Sky Sports and other broadcasters like CBS. Carragher is also a regular fixture on popular football podcast Stick to Football.
The ECHO contacted HMRC and was told that the department does not comment on individual cases. But a spokesperson said: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”
