A Canadian tourist has been killed and six others wounded after a gunman opened fire at the Teotihuacán pyramids, one of Mexico's most famous archaeological sites near Mexico City. The incident occurred on Monday lunchtime, shocking visitors at the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The gunman, whose nationality is unknown, shot himself after the attack, according to Cristobal Castaneda, security secretary for Mexico state. Mexican media identified the deceased as a 32-year-old Canadian woman. Among the wounded were a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and child, a Brazilian, and two Americans. Seven more people were injured in the ensuing panic and treated at the scene, including a Russian, a Colombian, a Brazilian, and four Americans.
Witness Laura Torres told La Jornada she heard more than 20 shots from the Pyramid of the Moon. “First it was sporadic, then one shot after another, then sporadic again,” she said. Authorities seized a firearm, knife, and unused ammunition, and evacuated tourists from the site.
Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand called it “a horrific act of gun violence” on X. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed “deep pain” and called for a thorough investigation. The British embassy in Mexico City urged UK citizens to follow local instructions. The shooting has raised security concerns as Mexico prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expecting over 5.5 million visitors.
