Abdul Shinwari, 24, has been charged with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl in Manchester city centre. He is due to appear before Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday, August 25.
Charges and arrest details
Shinwari, of no fixed abode, was arrested after reports that the teenager was attacked on Hope Street, near Piccadilly Gardens, at around 1.30am on July 14.
He has been charged with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, non-fatal strangulation and possession with intent to supply. He has been remanded into custody.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "A 24-year-old Afghan man has been charged following reports of the rape of a 17-year-old girl on Hope Street, near Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre, at around 1.30am on Tuesday 14 July 2026."
"Abdul Shinwari, of no fixed abode, has been charged with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, non-fatal strangulation and possession with intent to supply and was remanded into custody. He will appear at Manchester Crown Court on 25 August 2026."
Specialist safeguarding officers are continuing to support the victim, the spokesman added.
