Shed Destroyed After Fireworks Set Off by Yobs

A garden shed in Motherwell was completely destroyed after vandals set off fireworks, causing extensive damage. The building's contents were reduced to ashes, a police officer told Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Scott Law, 27, of Cumbrae Drive, Motherwell, was placed under supervision for 12 months and ordered to attend alcohol counselling. Sheriff John Hamilton KC also imposed 160 hours of unpaid work.

Law and another man were convicted of culpable and reckless fireraising after a trial last year. The incident occurred in Scotia Street around lunchtime on September 22, 2023. The pair were seen setting off fireworks in a garden.

A stray firework ignited a neighbouring shed, causing significant damage. Police and firefighters responded to the scene. The blast also affected a nearby house, breaking a bedroom window and causing smoke damage. Two spent fireworks were found on grass next to the shed.

Law was sentenced after a lengthy delay. The court heard he had previously breached a drug testing and treatment order. Defence lawyer Diarmid Bruce said Law had struggled following a family tragedy but now has a supportive partner and employment prospects.

Imposing an alternative to custody, Sheriff Hamilton told the accused: "You seem to be in a better place now."
