JT Leyland Limited, a Cumbria-based logistics and haulage business, has entered administration after more than 50 years of trading, with all 43 employees made redundant.
The Milnthorpe-based firm, which offered distribution, warehousing and storage solutions across the UK and Europe, took the step earlier this week after enduring a difficult trading period and mounting financial pressures.
Company history and operations
JT Leyland has been operating for over five decades, providing full and part-load distribution, pallet deliveries and same-day courier operations. Its fleet ranges from transit vans to 44-tonne articulated lorries, and the company ran over 70,000 sq ft of warehousing facilities.
The administrators have confirmed that all staff members have been made redundant, with a handful kept on in a consultancy capacity to assist with winding down operations.
Administrator's statement
Raj Mittal, joint administrator of JT Leyland Limited and a partner at FRP, said: "JT Leyland was a well-established business in the logistics and haulage sector, having built up a strong presence from its base in Milnthorpe."
"Our focus is now on managing an orderly wind down of the company's operations, supporting employees affected by the redundancies and working closely with key stakeholders to maximise value from the company's assets for the benefit of creditors."
Wider insolvency trends
According to the latest official figures, 182 businesses entered administration in August, a 60% increase on August 2025. The average monthly number of administrations during the first eight months of 2026 was 36% higher than the 2025 monthly average.
The Gazette, the official public record of insolvencies, reports this was driven by a surge in cases between March and August 2026, when upwards of 250 connected companies in the real estate sector went into administration.
Other businesses entering administration in September include pharmacies, charities and restaurant chains, such as Black Salt Sheen Ltd, Thai Express, Nova Catering Repairs Ltd, Medicare EMS Group UK Ltd, Ph4rmacy Limited and Salbrook Healthcare Limited, Scotpharm (MNA) Limited and MSLNA Healthcare Limited, Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide, OMC Global Limited, and Vigipro Security & FM Ltd.
