Howell's School in Llandaff, Cardiff, has confirmed it has started a staff consultation after reports that dozens of employees have been warned their jobs could be at risk.
The school said it is supporting all those affected during the consultation, which it described as part of its "ongoing approach to responsible financial management".
Around 30 staff affected
When asked how many staff were affected, the school declined to say. However, one person affected told WalesOnline that roughly 30 staff "are either at risk of redundancy or have to re-apply for their jobs".
The development comes as fee-charging schools report growing pressure from falling pupil numbers and changes to VAT.
Recent school closures
Ruthin School in Denbighshire and St Gerard's School in Bangor closed last term, following the closure of Oakleigh House in Swansea and St Clare's in Porthcawl last year.
In a statement, Howell's School, which charges fees from £3,754 a term in nursery to £6,942 in sixth form, said: "As a not-for-profit organisation, we regularly review our school structures and operations to ensure resources are directed where they will have the greatest impact.
"We have launched a staff consultation process at Howell’s as part of our ongoing approach to responsible financial management and are committed to supporting everyone involved.
"As these are confidential matters affecting colleagues, it would not be appropriate to comment on the detail while the consultation is ongoing."
School background
The school, run by the Girls' Day School Trust, takes girls from age three to 18 and boys from 16 to 18, and has been open since 1860.
