Ex-PC Barry Grummett jailed for rape and sexual assault
Ex-PC jailed for rape and sexual assault in 1970s

A former police officer has been jailed for 10 years after raping a teenage girl and sexually assaulting a woman while serving with Leicestershire Police in the 1970s.

Barry Grummett, 86, of Loughborough Road in Hathern, was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Friday, October 9. He was convicted by a jury after denying the crimes, having first been interviewed by police in 2023.

Attacks carried out while on duty

Grummett worked as an officer for Leicestershire Police between September 1970 and October 1981. The court heard he took advantage of his role in the force to carry out the attacks.

In 1977, he went to the girl's house after she had failed to turn up at school. While alone in her home in Leicestershire, Grummett raped her before visiting on further occasions and touching her inappropriately over an 18-month period.

Second victim assaulted

He also sexually assaulted a second victim, who was an adult at the time, in the late 1970s. The court heard how Grummett, who was not on duty at the time, touched her inappropriately while they were alone.

Detective Inspector Amanda Boswell, from Leicestershire Police's Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU), said: "The force takes reports of rape and sexual assault extremely seriously and will always work to bring the perpetrators to justice.

"Grummett was working as a police officer - a position that carries great responsibility and trust. Taking advantage of and abusing that role for sexual gratification will simply not be tolerated."

Victims commended for coming forward

Boswell added: "Both victims must be commended for coming forward and providing evidence in front of a jury that has resulted in him finally being brought to justice for what he did nearly 50 years ago.

"I hope this outcome provides them with a degree of closure and allows them to move on with their lives as best they can.

"I would also encourage any other victims of non-recent sexual abuse - either at the hands of Grummett or by someone else - to come forward and also seek justice. Please be reassured that it's never too late to speak out."
