Varley enters 'Monster Mansion' under threat
Jamie Varley, 37, has begun his whole life sentence at HMP Wakefield, dubbed 'Monster Mansion', after being convicted of murdering his 13-month-old adoptive son, Preston Davey. Hardened criminals at the West Yorkshire prison have reportedly given Varley a 'traditional prisoners welcome' and warned him: 'There is no way out of this hell.'
A prison source told the media: 'There's a bounty on his head, everyone wants to be the one to hurt him first, and he was made very aware of that as he entered the prison.' Varley was convicted of murder, sexual assault, and other child sex offences following an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court.
The horrific abuse of Preston Davey
Preston Davey was adopted by Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, in April 2023. On July 27, 2023, Preston was found 'submerged in a bath' and taken to hospital. Varley was seen wailing dramatically, but it was later revealed to be a sick act: Preston was dry and had not swallowed water. Drowning was ruled out, and a post-mortem found 40 injuries, including signs of sexual abuse. The case shocked the nation.
Prison life under constant guard
The insider added: 'Varley was in for a rude awakening if he thought he would be getting an easy ride. He is arguably one of Britain's most hated men right now, and that stands in the prison too. The other prisoners knew he was coming and they waited for him.' Varley is currently housed in isolation, spending most of his time in his cell alone, with guards monitoring him to ensure his safety.
However, the source explained: 'In time he will be allowed to move about a bit more, but any time he does leave his cell it is likely he will be flanked by guards, they have a duty of care to him. He was welcomed last night by loud banging and shouting as fellow prisoners who anticipated his arrival when they learnt of a prison van arriving to drop off newbies. He was whispering to himself and spent the whole night just sobbing.'
Where is John McGowan-Fazakerley?
The current location of Varley's partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, is unknown, but insiders claim he is likely to be at either HMP Manchester Strangeways or HMP Full Sutton. The couple were both charged in connection with Preston's death, but McGowan-Fazakerley's sentencing details have not been disclosed.
