A 25-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a baby girl died in hospital following an incident at a home in South Manchester.
Emergency Response
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, rushed to a property in South Manchester on Thursday morning after reports of a concern for welfare. A neighbour reported seeing a paramedic run out of the home with a baby, describing the scene as 'terrifying' and 'very scary.' The baby girl was taken to hospital where she later died despite the best efforts of emergency services.
Arrest and Investigation
The woman arrested on suspicion of child neglect remains in police custody, according to Greater Manchester Police. Detective Chief Inspector Ian Wrench stated: 'This is a devastating incident and news of a police investigation will cause shock in the local community. Please be assured that we are keeping an open mind as we pursue several lines of enquiry, working closely with our partners to understand the full circumstances surrounding how this death occurred. We are doing everything possible to provide answers for this baby and their family.'
Detectives and forensic investigators were seen at the property yesterday afternoon as an investigation began, with the force continuing to investigate today. One neighbour said: 'There was a lot of police and two ambulances. I heard one of them mention a child.' Another added: 'I didn't see or hear anything until a police officer knocked on my door. There was one in uniform and one in plain clothes. The one in plain clothes just said there had been an incident and asked if I'd heard anything. He didn't say any more.'
