Police Lt. Anthony Espinoza reported that the driver of a Toyota Prius lost control after hitting the cyclist, then swerved into the bakery section of the market. The driver, identified as a woman, is cooperating with investigators and undergoing a medical evaluation. The condition of the bicyclist remains unknown at this time.
Three victims, some of whom were trapped beneath the vehicle, died at the scene, as confirmed by Lantz. A subsequent incident report from the fire department detailed that four people were transported to hospitals—two in serious condition and two with minor injuries. Additionally, two other individuals declined transport against medical advice.

There was a significant police and fire department response, with a triage area established outside the store to treat patients. TV news footage captured a silver sedan with its boot open fully inside the store on Westwood Boulevard.
