Nancy Meyers' 2015 film The Intern has shot to the number one spot on the Netflix Top 10 in the US, just a day after its addition to the streaming service on June 22. The comedy-drama, starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, has outperformed recent hits like Straw, Gerard Butler's Plane, and the 30-year-old thriller Copycat.
Written and directed by Meyers, The Intern follows Ben (De Niro), a 70-year-old widower who signs up for a senior internship at an online fashion company. There, he works closely with the company's founder, Jules (Hathaway), and the pair form a close relationship that helps them both grow. The film holds a 60% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 73% audience rating.
The film's resurgence on Netflix highlights a continued demand for Meyers' work, who has not directed a feature since The Intern. Her previous films include beloved classics such as The Parent Trap, Something's Gotta Give, and The Holiday. A new project, tentatively titled Paris Paramount, was in development at Netflix in 2023 but was shelved over budget concerns.
Despite the setback, Meyers recently teased a possible sequel to The Holiday in an Instagram post with Jude Law. For now, fans can enjoy The Intern and The Holiday on Netflix, with many hoping for a new film from the acclaimed director soon.
