Tragic Death on Motorway Following Police Chase

A major police manhunt is underway after a 19-year-old male pedestrian was killed by a vehicle on the M66 motorway. The tragic incident occurred near the junction with the M60 at Sinister Island at approximately 9.40pm on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the teenager is believed to have been a passenger in a blue BMW X3 that was earlier involved in a police pursuit. Officers had initially attempted to stop the vehicle after it was seen being driven at high speed on Bury Old Road and subsequently went through a red light.

Sequence of Events Leading to Fatality

The police chase was initiated but officers temporarily lost sight of the BMW. The vehicle was later rediscovered on the Junction 18 roundabout of the M60. It is understood that the BMW had been abandoned after colliding with another car.

The occupants of the BMW then fled the scene on foot along the motorway. It was during this escape that the 19-year-old was struck by a Tesla, resulting in fatal injuries. The southbound section of the M66 remained closed overnight as emergency services and investigators worked at the scene.

Investigation and Appeals for Information

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident. In a standard procedure for such events, GMP has referred itself to both its own Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

DC Ian Lawton from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) stated: 'Officers initiated a pursuit in accordance with policy after a vehicle failed to stop for police after being seen driving at speed. The subsequent collision and tragic fatal injuries are now part of an independent review with the IOPC.'

The SCIU is now urging anyone with information to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have captured the incident on dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage. Witnesses are asked to contact police on 0161 856 4741, quoting reference number 3150 of 16/11/2025.

Information can also be submitted via the GMP website's reporting tool or LiveChat function. The independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
