Two girls aged 13 and 14 have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire destroyed the Grade II-listed Raven Hotel in Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire. The blaze, which broke out at around 4.45pm on Sunday, was tackled by eight fire engines and multiple specialist vehicles from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.
West Mercia Police confirmed that the fire is believed to have been started deliberately, but no injuries were reported. The two teenagers have been released on bail pending further inquiries. Officers remain at the scene and have urged the public to avoid the area.
The fire service said the first engine arrived within two minutes of the emergency call. Group Commander Simon Cusack praised the rapid response, which ensured the fire was contained quickly. The building, part of which dates back to the 16th century, was totally destroyed.
The Raven Hotel had been disused and was subject to a court order secured by Wychavon District Council last year after falling debris posed a risk to the public. Scaffolding had been erected, and urgent works were due to finish this week. The council expressed its anger and upset at the devastating fire, stating it would invoice the owner for the works.
Police are continuing their investigation and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
